We’re all for wintry wedding details, hearty reception menus (and warm-you-right-up spiked hot cocoa) and bride and groom portraits in the freshly fallen snow — there’s nothing dreamier! But one Pennsylvania couple took the concept of a winter wedding to the max this weekend when epic snowstorm Jonas pummeled the Northeast and other parts of the country. Instead of opting for an inclement weather plan B and huddling indoors to weather the blizzard and say “I do,” these newlyweds made the most of their snowy big day.

Kevin and Carmen Shanahan of Fallston, Pennsylvania, were totally into the idea of a snow-covered wedding &mash; but a blizzard?! Not so much. But the lovebirds refused to let a little thing like an impending snowstorm ruin their wedding day. “We were getting married, blizzard or not!” Carmen, a 31-year-old EMT, told People with a laugh. “We were like, ‘It’s game time!'”

Luckily, photographer Jeffrey Sabotta of Sabotta Imagery was there to capture every snow-white detail of their church ceremony and romantic and elegant barn-style reception. While this of course included a lot of indoor getting-ready shots, family portraits, up-close details (we love her wintry bouquet!) and sweet moments between the couple — complete with a shot of the bride’s snow boots hiding beneath her strapless trumpet wedding dress! — Sabotta and his subjects braved the blizzarding outdoors for portraits that are completely breathtaking.

“I told them, ‘If you’re willing to do this, I promise the pictures will turn out amazing!'” Sabotta, 37, told People. “So they strapped on their snow boots and came outside with me.”

And amazing they are! The photos show a snow-covered wonderland with sure-to-be howling winds and ice encompassing the couple — but all the bride, who’s staying warm in a white furry stole, and groom seem to are each other.

“We were laughing and having a good time taking those pictures,” Sabotta, 37, told People. “People were out there in their coats cheering us on!”

Carmen told the magazine that most of the invited guests were unable to attend, but that all immediate family members were there. “It ended up being a perfect day for an imperfect predicament,” she said. “Kevin and I keep telling ourselves, ‘We got married in a blizzard!’ It still blows our minds.”

And the groom, a 29-year-old Pennsylvania police officer, agrees with his bride, calling the day “amazing.” “We obviously hadn’t planned any of it to be that way, but I couldn’t have been any happier in that moment.”
